Folks,

For those who might not be aware of it, Texas States is being held in Austin this year. There isn't a registration link on the PDGA website but there is a link here: http://fullcontactdiscgolf.1freecart.com/c/98824/texas-states-2013.htm

The Pro side is an NT event. The Am side is an A-tier. The weekend of States, is also South by Southwest in Austin, so lodging might be a bit more challenging than usual.

Vinnie has been posting a lot of info on facebook, but there is also a website for it here: http://texasstates.org/2013/index.html

I'd advise that folks get signed up quickly as the slots will fill before much longer...I saw a name of someone on facebook that is helping coordinate lodging for folks that want to stay with a local that weekend. Good luck everybody-hope to see you up there in Austin for this year's event!

Hey Houston disc golfers!!! Get your registration in soon or else you might not get into the Texas States hosted by Austin this year!

I checked the PDGA website this morning, and saw 60/120 in Pro and 80/144 in Am. We are about half full in both Am and Pro divisions for the event.

After many years of being run by/in Houston, this is an opportunity to see how another city runs their event. The more Houstonians we get there, the better we'll be able to assess whether or not we want to see it hosted at another city again in the future.

I encourage all of our disc golf players to attend this version of Texas States so that we can decide if another city does as good of a job as Houston does in hosting the biggest and best DG tournament in the State!

I just signed up my daughter SuperGirl Nicole for the 2013 Texas States. She is ready to start playing disc golf again. I renew her PDGA membership. I just mailed her HFDS membership. She has a brand new Grip disc golf bag (charcoal gray with pink letters). She even played a round of disc golf at Moffit on Monday (this was only the 2nd time she has played disc golf in the last 6 months). She is looking forward to States and at making another run at Am Worlds this summer.

By the way, we like the concrete tee pads at Moffit. The old tee pads were dangerous to the ankles. She played the short tee pads (shot a 51). The course looked nice. We will try the long tees next time.

Glad to see it Rick! I saw that Nicole was signed up in FPO - good for her!!! If she's shooting a 51 at Moffitt these days, then she should be in pretty good company (and competitive) in FPO.

I've seen a good uptick in Houstonians registered for states in the last week or so. Looks like about 20 players in all so far. Hope the trend continues!

Okay Houston!!!

I just finished checking out the PDGA registration list for Texas State DGC.

We need a bigger Houston area showing at this event!

Pros = 10 Houston area affiliations out of 97 registered.
Ams = 25 Houston area affiliations out of 117 registered.

Ony 35 Houston area players??? Come on gang, you know you're going to want to see how another city measures up in their hosting of Texas States against the ones that Houston has done.

I happen to think that Houston has almost always done a fantastic job of hosting the state's biggest and best tournament. Others have long claimed that they could do a better job, and so this year is their chance to walk their talk. There are many, many area players who have played in a lot of our Texas State events but haven't signed up for the only time we've decided to let another city host it. I would love to see you folks sign up for this Austin edition and then to hear your feedback afterward to see what you think. What was done better, what was done worse and what things were different but created a positive memory for you.

Space in this tournament is starting to get limited, so I wanted to plead with my fellow DGers in our area to get signed up for this year's Texas State DGC while there is still opportunity to get in. I sure hope to get to see you guys in Austin next month so that we can discuss it afterward.

Pretty sure I am not going to be playing this year.

Manor left too much Cacti in my arse for me to consider playing three rounds there for $160.

I was a supporter of the event moving elsewhere but it would have been nice if they kept a multi-course format.

Dang Matt!!! It's a bummer that you aren't going to play in States this year. You should be there representin' us! It looks like a very strong MPO field.

Yeah, I'm with you on that whole multi-course thing...I haven't played any of the 3 courses being used for States this year and was hoping to get to play at least a couple of them. All 3 rounds at Manor wouldn't have been my choice of format either.

But with letting someone else run it in another city, you've got to let them have some leeway to use their own style and formats. All we can do as players is to provide some feedback after the event and see whether the club wants to pass the event around in the future.

Vinnie is VERY Pro-division oriented, so I expect that he has set a format that he thinks the majority of Pros will like. I guess we'll have to try it out and see what the verdict is afterward.

I'm sorry that you're not going to play in it Matt - you're someone that has played in most of the Tx States tourneys since I started playing in them and I would be very interested in hearing your thoughts about it afterward. If it flops, then it should be an easy decision to make about letting it roam again in the future.

Manor has great shots but it is still not as "fun" as the other two courses. If States "flops" it will be because the pros complain about the course....and probably not much else.

I have played EVERY states since 2000 which was my first tournament ever and where I joined the PDGA. I think the tournament moving around is a great idea considering there are much better courses around the state than can be found in Houston, Currently it just seems that they decided it was best not to play them.

I love Met Center and Roy G.......but Manor isn't a course I will drive to Austin for just because a tournament is there that weekend. Met and Roy G are courses I would (and have) gone out of my way to play just because I like them. All three courses make you play golf....I just like the type of golf at the other courses more.

Well everyone...if you've waited this long, then you might be disappointed to learn that the tournament is FULL. I spoke with Vinnie last night, and he says that he has a waiting list for every division except for some of the women's divisions. He said that wait lists are so long that anyone that calls now he's telling them to forget it.

Vinnie was saying that he thinks that he could've added another 200 players across the whole thing. He's got some of the very top Open players sitting on wait-list slots - Matt Orum, Cameron Todd and Dixon Jowers for a few of the notable hold-outs.

I'm really looking forward to seeing what kind of show our Austin brothers give us. I sure would like to get everyone's opinion after the tournament...take notes if you have to!

Note that the TxSDGC organizers have posted no day-of-play check-in.

http://www.texasstates.org/2013/schedule.htm

That means Am (B & C pool) divisions must be checked in by 5pm on FRIDAY and Pro (A pool) divisions by 6pm on THURSDAY.

This is different from past years' TxSDGC, and I confirmed that is their intent on their Facebook page (http://hfds.org/vbull/www.facebook.com/TexasStateDiscGolfChampionships). If you've registered to play don't get shut out by not checking-in on time....

Same for me, I won't be attending this one. I'm not going to spend that much on entry fee and a trip to Austin just to play Manor 3 times. Although I do think its good Texas States is moving around to other cities, I would not have voted for Austin to host if I knew the pros would be forced to play Manor only. I'm sure the Am's will have a great time though.

Maybe next year we can try Tyler and everyone can play the 3 great courses all in one single park.

I believe Vinnie has posted several times on Facebook that he thinks they could have/could run Pros and Ams on back-to-back weekends. That would obviously expand the fields and course selection.

That would be great if they could actually pull it off! I know that the first TX States I attended had an AM and Pro weekend! We came back to spectate for the Pro weekend. I ended up asking Al Shack if he was a Pro and he responded by saying yes and that he was the guy on the poster I was carrying around to get signed!:D

I was also able to get Barry Schultz to sign a Metal/Gold Dragon mini which I still have at my mom's.

The demand for the event is large enough that going back to separate Pro/Am weekends would probably be a good idea.

BTW if States goes to Tyler I will also be skipping out on that!

Well I am not a fan of dogwood gold either but the other 2 courses are good and there are 2 more courses just a few miles away they could use

Good luck to all of my amigos playing in States this year. The East Met Park (Manor) is a very tough course. Staying in the fairway is key...unfortunately the winds seem to work against us for dOing that!

It's going to be a bit chillier this morning. 50's right now with heavy clouds...don't think its going to get a lot warmer.

Check out the standings after round 1, Hfds has the MPG locked down pretty solid! Ha!! Should have a great card today!
