Just wait until all the 940 guys sign up.:p Under 16 is usually the most competitive Jr division since most guys over 16 that are pretty good just play in ADV.

Thanks, Patrick and Lou! Way to encourage the little guy, Matt.
By the way, C.J. isn't just a good athlete. He won two eighth-grade academic awards the other night: Three years on AB honor roll and three years of A's and B's while being commended in TAKS math and reading every year. He also was selected Coach of the Season in spring flag football—he coaches a third-/fourth-grade division team.
Was C.J. happy about his academic honors? Nope . . . the ceremony was at the same time as the Tuesday mini at Imperial. The boy wanted to disc golf!

Wasn't trying to discourage anyone just wanted to state that there is always the share of "baggers" in <16 who basically make it a mini ADV division at the top.
In 2002 the 1st place finisher in <16 would have won ADV. That year it was Myles Harding, Greg Barsby, Matt Orum, and the 12 year old Garrett Gurthie who have all gone on to be insane golfers.
CJ is on his way up but he has only been playing a little over a year while many of these guys have been playing for quite some time. Usually there is a little Swedish kid that will show up and throw 575ft in the distance contest as well like Linus did in 05.
Moral of the story is that Jr Worlds is loads of fun since you get to play on a course full of other DGing kids, you get to see real funny reactions to bad shots, and you get to see some kids that will be Pro next year. CJ will do just fine as long as he stays within his game and just plays smart and remembers that it is all about limiting mistakes.
I remember Neal told me to lay up any putt outside of 30ft to eliminate any triple putts and while I wasn't that much of a sissy his advice did keep me closer to the basket.
The courses in KC are pretty similar to the TX style courses with a few like Cliff Drive and Down under being more technical.

I don't think Matt was trying to say anything negative Susan, just state the reality of Worlds. There will be some really great juniors, that is why it is Worlds. Matt just happened to be the topped rated junior in the world when he was lucky enough to win his world title. The competition is awsome and the experience is life long. Nikko didn't finish worlds that year due to a late wake up call, look where he is now. :D C.J. has a great future in Disc Golf, just make sure he gets that college degree to fall back on. Again best of luck C.J. LOU

Matt: Your second post was better than your first. Thanks for clarifying for C.J. He always can use good advice.
C.J. knows about the potential competition; he keeps up with the other junior players. He knows that to be the best, he has to play the best. He'll get that chance at worlds. We'll see how safe he plays those putts!

Really I think you took it the wrong way.
What is negative about saying "wait until all the 940 guys sign up.:p Under 16 is usually the most competitive Jr division since most guys over 16 that are pretty good just play in ADV"?
I was just pointing out that very few have signed up and like i said there are always at least 3-4 940+ guys that show up and as in 02' a few that should have been Pro. Also I was inferring that <16 is more competitive than <19 because most years the older group is more watered down as many of the potential contenders are playing ADV. Last Year lil Wiggins played <19 but I think he did it because there were a few <16 guys rated as high as he was but within <19 he was the top guy.
Maybe you should let CJ try a few tournaments out in Int if you think playing with better players is the key! Don't wait for a rating to catch up since moving up will likely speed things along. I never looked at my rating when moving up and just did it when I felt able to compete with the better players. Once you move up (esp if you are young) you will shave 3-4 strokes within a few months.

You don't really know Matt, he is a caring and good kid with an opinion. (Modus operandi) LOL Message board facts are different than being negative. This little world of disc golf can be very cruel in the long run, be prepared. If you want to compete in the upper levels, it is no cake walk, there is some negativity, and good old bad times. You have to flow with the changes, but it is a good life lesson for those willing to tough it out. Good luck
He just gets carried away with the problems in the disc golf community that others don't see. He has been playing and contributing to the disc golf community for many years. He is young, and his communication skills could be better, that's why he is in college. We all could communicate our reasoning better, just don't judge what you don' t know. He's like his daddy, outspoken and opinionated. We shall all get along in the long run. Peace:confused:

Lou: You're right, I don't know Matt at all. I am judging him by what he posts on the message boards, which is rarely anything positive. Maybe if he stopped sounding like a broken record with all his complaining about Birdshot, I might have a better appreciation of him. Your right I am usually negative but that probably has something to do with the fact we only have 1 big event a year in H-town with no B-tiers to also support the area with even better events.
C-tiers are fun but 12 is a lot and I just wish there were some B-tiers within the area as well so we wouldn't have to go to Austin, Dallas, or San Antonio to find one.
Birdshot meets its goal of bringing in new players but if you look the Pro division is rarely anything decent with the last event having no Mpo players. We used to have 3-4 b-tiers a year in Houston but now we are saturated with smaller C-tiers and with the way the TX Schedule is becomming overcrowded it may be harder to get 12 good dates in the future.
I don't know but I am looking forward to the rumored SPring Valley event if it really is a B-tier.

Just a reminder that Birdshot got started up because there were NO-tiers running in Houston (other than States) for nearly two years. I don't think our "saturation" prevents anyone from stepping up to run a B-tier....we're not trying to compete with anyone...in fact, I would encourage someone else to start a series or even organize a couple or three or four B-tiers in Houston. Yes, we've been lazy in soliciting sponsors ($500 added cash to open division w/100% payout & $10 players pack for each player....add it up!) and that's why we haven't done any yet. Andi & Don have set things into motion for Spring Valley though....so it looks like, with their help, we'll be having us a B-tier in September! To get back on track with this post....good luck to all of you H-Towners heading to Worlds in a few weeks! I wish I was you!!!

You subtract the Players pack from the total payout so it isn't anything added in that sense just payout pre tournament. Also the money isn't too bad unless you do not have your own supply of discs. Get a donated traveler or something and do a putting contest to make some of the added cash back.
It just isn't as fun when you are playing for 85%.

Yeah but I have a feeling we may be nearing the end of the world by then. It will be in like 2012 since I will be 3 hours north of Town. Plus after playing States I am not nearly as fond of making Bass the course of choice since the hurricane hurt it quite a bit.
Now you may have to come up to the Pecan Park Open in Nac Eric since next year I will be helping the tournament out with its new course.
Also Eric you don't have to pay the bare minimum and I have actually played C-tiers that had better than average B-tier payout. It is all about what the TD wants for his event and what kind of luck they have with finding cash.

Anyone plan on driving up? I am going to sign up but have also been thinking about just not going so that I will have plenty of money for USDGC. Just sucks that playing 1015 golf will only win you $300 when you payed $225 to enter.

Hey Matt looks like you need to go practice!:D
I won the Tx State Rep spot if I want it and I would like to have the cash to go to both without sponging off my parents. You have to get top ten at worlds to be able to break even which means the top 7%. You can do that at a B-tier with much less effort.

Now, that's a payout!

Didn't want to start a new thread just to say good luck to all of you heading to Kansas City this weekend, so I'll say it on the "cheap flights" thread! I wish I was going with you....maybe next year! Hope everybody does well....or if not that you at least have a great experience! See you when you get back!!!

Good luck to all of the "homies" heading to KC!
I'm still intending to run the Commando these next two weekends anyway as only half of the "usuals" are going to be in KC. :D We'll be watching you folks all week long and we'll toast a Gatorade or something to you while you're up there!

Looking at the roster for junior girls a minute ago....looks like Nicole will be a shoe-in for bringing home the Championship trophy! She's got a way higher rating than any of the other young ladies playing....that doesn't always mean anything, but I'd say she's got a pretty good chance....good luck, Nicole!!!

I was just checking the leaderboard for Worlds on the PDGA site....looks like a good number of Houston players in the top half of a couple of amateur pools after round one.....way to represent! Nothing wrong with being in the top half of a pool of sixty-something!!!

ERic: Thanks so much for boiling those long lists of results down to what's really important for us. It's so much easier to look at yours and then, when we have time, peruse the PDGA's results. Much appreciated!
BTW, C.J. sounded pretty nervous today on the phone, but I could tell he was really pleased with his +2 first round. Rick said it's been raining, so the courses are muddy. C.J. sounded tired after his second round. Fortunately, tomorrow is only one round, so maybe he and Rick can sightsee.

It is a thoughtful gesture, but I like to look at all the scores, to see how they are really doing within their divisions, how tight a race might be, etc.
It also let's us see how EVERYONE else is doing, remember, it's not always about Houston! LOL
Sounds like the Jrs. had to deal with some really challenging weather/mud/fun yesterday.
Continued good luck to everyone!

Dang... Lou, Sue... did I forget that I typed "you must look at this list and only this list and ignore the well known PDGA site with scores for everybody". Egad, I'd link to that but I'd get grief for doing that too.
Oh well, here it is anyway :p :
Pros: http://www.pdga.com/tournament-results?TournID=8104&include_ratings=1
Ams: http://www.pdga.com/tournament-results?TournID=8105&include_ratings=1
But you know this is the Houston FDS message board, so while you're free to peruse the PDGA site until your fingers fall off, how the Houston area players are doing at World's is relevant here.

C'mon Nicole, get that comeback in gear. Bring another World's Championship to Texas. :D We do not have many world champions to represent our state. Eric please chime in with the World Champions from Texas, you can do it. And we wonder why Texas is lacking in disc golf. Now why doubles doesn't count I don't know, but we do have some doubles and mixed doubles world's champs. Eric, put those up for reference purposes please, it is the Houston area and we all need to know who they are, some of us might even know some of them.:pJK

Thanks for the update ERic!
Good to see Yocky is doing so well in his pool. Coleman stubbed his toe on that last round - darn it!

some promising rating there, feel like I am at work today, can't get off the computer, but the backyard is being torn up so the city can revamp the sanitary sewer lines... They are threatening to breakup the concrete around the pool and remove trees! They tore down the fence in the back so I can't let the dogs out. At least I tricked a worker to put his hand down the clean out! Pays to be a plumbing designer. he he

ERic - you might want to switch to just scores as the ratings can't be kept straight after a division's pools have been shuffled. Once the shuffle happens, then there isn't anyway to associate rounds (and ratings) and the courses they were played on.

Larry - very true. But as you say scores can't [easily] be associated with specific courses either. IMO the scores are even less relevant than the ratings. E.g. If I reported that Joe Golfer shot 59, 67, 60, 53, and 62, then do you have any clue how well he's playing in the tournament? Not really. But if I tell you that he shot rounds rated 920, 915, 937, 968, and 949, then I think that does give you a fairly accurate representation of how he's playing.
Perhaps I should have stated earlier that the point was not to be able to compare each player on the list to one another in terms of how they rank vs. each other. You can't even do that across pools before any shuffles happen.
What you can tell by looking at this is that Matt Hall is playing 1000-rated golf, Neal D. is playing 971 golf, etc.
For players in the lead pool their strokes off the lead count is absolutely accurate. Their rank is probably close to accurate but for players near the back is subject to being jumped by players in the following pool.

One nice thing about these logged updates is that it makes it possible to go back and see who was in what pools for the earlier rounds... ;)

When I looked at the schedule, it appears that the Pro Master Women and Grandmaster Women don't have any Saturday play scheduled? No cut? What's up with that?
The Advanced women only got to play four courses, Jrs. played five different courses, seems like the ladies were left out this year.

Remember, I'm old and I've seen this side of man for many, many years.
There are somethings you can always count on.
If nothing else, it is consistant and always leaves one feeling......................warm, yes, warm and fuzzy. Guess that's how one feels after the dog lifts his leg and pees on you. Yep, that's it. :D

WOW! 27 players from the Houston area covering 11 divisions. 13 of the 27 players cashed. Nicole is a world champ again. Neal brings home the most cash. Everybody is a winner for showing up. That is a lot of good memories for those folks that took off a week for some intense disc golf competition. Welcome back home Birdshot's Tiff and Patrick Brogdon and DG Consultants Andi and Don Young. I'm gonna make it someday to the ultimate disc golf experience. Can't wait to hear everybody's story. Had 5 out of towners sneak into the Houston crew list. Actually, they come to so many Houston tournaments and are such nice people, that you wouldn't even think of them as out of towners. We've adopted them as our own. Is this the biggest representation from Houston area ever?

There was one more from Beaumont in there that you missed.
