One set longs and one short?

yes, longs and then shorts
derek
05-13-2009, 11:31 AM
the short boxes are almost unplayable, should just play both rounds from longs

That's a possibility....but we could always (and probably will) flag the shorts to make a better box.

Please get an ADV or Pro player to go out and do this for you guys. Supposedly last year the boxes were way to easy.

you could always do a "Bring a 40lb bag of pea gravel" for free entry, and fix the boxes that morning.
I'll be in the Bahamas that day...tough choice but I made the call

Matt, if your not playing this tournament than don't worry about what tee-box we are playing from, who is in what divison, or anything like that cause your 2 cents don't matter in my opinon. You talk to much behind your keyboard and say nothing at the tournaments that you don't even play in. You say something to me, I'll just put it like this. I'm not scared to sent someone else to the ER and go back to jail. So just keep your mouth shut or say something to me at the Moffit. BTW you were not missed at OM.

Bossjay, chill out man. Birdshot loves all the disc golf players in the Houston area. ALL! We listen and value all opinions about what goes on at our tournaments. Matt gives some good feedback. Its just his opinion. He has never threatened anybody that I know of. We don't need any hothead bullies at our tournaments. Personally, I would love it if Matt showed up to all of our tournaments. He is a top rated Pro and we could use a few of those. Don't forget, he grew up on the Houston disc golf scene, and has earned some respect. :)

I believe that the issue at Moffitt at the last event was where some of those tee boxes were moved.
For example, one of the few annie shots is #7A, but when a box is moved directly left instead of straight back, it becomes a very easy hyzer shot. This course is very easy to begin with, and doesn't need that type of help.
I would suggest that whenever possible, you guys move boxes behind (which is available on most holes) and not to the side of original boxes.
Given when this event is being held, I hope everyone has fun, but this old lady will have started medication that keeps me from playing through the summer.
Bring lots of bug spray.

As long as everyone (in a division) plays from the same boxes it doesn't really matter where they're moved it's still a "fair" competition.
I guess the issue some people have is with the perceived level of challenge or fun when the boxes need to be moved out of necessity.
That being said I agree with the "move 'em back" vs. "move 'em to the side" strategy.

I think the issue last year with moving 7A back was that the further back the tee is moved the more it moves into the fairway of 10 and 6. They would have to be stray tee shots but it is a possible danger.

Not even sure who you are and I'm glad I wasn't missed at OM but I sure hope the other Pros who didn't show were. Also I'm sure glad your love of these events has lead you to take violent action against any differing opinions. Maybe my 2 cents don't matter to you but personally I couldn't care less what you think with a reaction like that.
Believe it or not I want the Houston DG community to get as strong as possible I may just have a different view of how that should be achieved. The Birdshot events are doing a great job I just thing we need to somehow grow the more competitive divisions as well.

WOW! Didn't even know I got on the computer last night. Got alittle carried away on drinking. Sorry for disrespecting anyone on this board. Yeah, some people have different views about things and that's why this board is here I guess. The input and advice and whatnot. I'm not the bully type and didn't mean to put off as that. I use to protect the kids in school that did get bullied. Momma said " if you don't have nothing nice to say than don't say nothing at all."

Well, hopefully everybody feels better now & we'll all have a big group hug at Moffitt on June 6th! Nobody from Corpus will get turned away this time...unless, of course, we fill ahead of game day....which IS possible! So tell everybody who's interested that you may know from out of town to register early!

I don't have to explain myself to no one but my wife and kids. If you don't believe me than that is your fault and who ever else that don't. I said I'm sorry to who I offened and if they accept that than I thank you for having a heart. Sometimes it's hard to hold your tounge and say what is bothering you but to do it in a respectful manner. I crossed the line by what I said and thank you for not kicking me off the board and giving me another chance. Like Momma said again " if you don't have nothing nice to say than don't say nothing at all." If you think that's funny than I'm glad you got a laugh at it and not offened. One more time, I'm sorry. Let the door be closed on that.

Not sure why the on-line registration icon isn't on PDGA tour schedule yet...we'll be getting to that soon. In the meantime, do what Richard Fason did & mail it in to me....see www.houstonbirdshot.com (http://www.houstonbirdshot.com) for a downloadable registration form (and our complete schedule) and go ahead & get into this thing! And yes, DGC will have our CFR discs in time for this one....c'mon out & get your Ratfink on!!!

That box has lots of overgrowth right now. Seems to be lacking the usual ruts/groves/mudhole called a tee box. I bet with a little TLC it could be cleaned up and used as provided.

We're planning on heading over there next weekend to do an evaluation...and will probably bring some rakes & shovels & other implements of destruction to try to get some good boxes out of what's there. If we end up flagging some boxes, hopefully we can move them back & not get in anybody's way from another hole...and hopefully will make everybody happy this time! Most likely we'll be going out there Saturday the 30th....if anybody wants to join us to help out & then play a round, let us know!

BRING A TABLE / CHAIRS... all benches removed at moffitt - no fun on a hot day. :(
from Conrad:
Our new relationship with the Houston Parks and Rec Dept. has created changes at Moffitt. The parks department has removed the metal benches around the course because they are required to be on cement foundations. If we want benches on the course we will have to request them through the parks department. They are supposed to be installing more trash cans in the park. The problematic issue of the tee boxes has been brought to their attention and there is an ongoing discussion on how to address it. A proposal for cement tee boxes is in the works and will be presented to them soon. Other proposals concerning Mozola are already being considered by HPARD. Understand that it may take time for the changes that we want to be implemented. Like any productive, respectful and healthy relationship it involves give and take. I ask that everyone be patient and productive in nurturing the disc golf' community's new relationship with HPARD. One way everyone can help is by relaying this information to Moffitt players that did not receive this email.

bmugwump
06-04-2009, 08:49 AM
I would be surprised if it didn't! With sunshine the next couple of days it should dry up pretty good though. If not, then we'll just have to make all the water around the baskets OB!!
derek
06-04-2009, 09:14 AM

well i have an idea for some OB if you must have it. any throw less than 350ft is OB and you have to re-tee and take a stroke.

No rain yesterday in this neck of the woods.
As for the OB.............thoughts like that need to be saved for USDGC and/or events that don't offer am divisions, or at least rec and no women's divisions. I only know one or two girls who can throw that far in this neck of the woods.
Leafy................sounds like you need to head out of town and play some bigger venues. Eyes bigger than stomach. LOL

There is very little ob on that course. There will be at least one mando to help keep discs off other fairways. It didn't rain out there. So are you actually going to come play?
bmugwump
06-04-2009, 10:16 AM
My comment about water around the baskets was the joke! I was just giving Leafy a hard time for giving Tiffany & Patrick hell about the OB at McDade a couple of months ago!! As far as I know, the only OB at Moffitt would be over the neighbor's fence on 5 & into the gated area around the swimming pool on 18.
Suemac
06-04-2009, 10:18 AM
I can't speak for Leafy (BTW I knew it was joke!) but I'll be out in the afternoon to hang out.
Started meds on Monday so no golf for this gal for a couple of months. :(
My thoughts would be to consider using the mando on #2 regular to keep folks off of #1's fairway.
Will Tiff or someone be out to take registration at Moffitt this afternoon?

Tiff and I will be out at 5:30 this evening to play/take registrations. Good suggestion about 2, if your out, can you point out which tree is usually designated mando? We were thinking about a mando on alt 12 to keep people from going out wide left on 13.

Just another reminder to everyone to bring a chair if you can....most of the tables & benches are gone until the parks department puts permanent pads out there for them. HFDS is working with these guys to possibly get concrete boxes put in when they start pouring concrete for the tables & benches....keep your fingers crossed...and maybe soon we won't have to play around the rutted gravel pits anymore!

I just talked to Andi & it turns out that the CFR discs that were supposed to be here in time for this tournament won't make it to town until next week....they'll have them out at the shop at Spring Valley for those of you who want to save your vouchers if you were looking forward to snagging some of those discs! And of course there should still be some left (as well as a new batch of different CFR's) at Klein next month.

I signed Nicole (SuperGirl) up for this tournament yesterday. She will be playing in the Advanced Women's division. Now that soccer season is over (she has a 2 month break), she plans to play a little more disc golf.
On a side note, her soccer team (Albion Hurricanes) did really well. They got 2nd place in the Director's Cup Texas State Championships. They did this despite losing their team captain to a freak ankle injury just before the start of the state championship tournament. The Director's Cup covers south Texas from El Paso, thru Austin, thru Houston, to Beaumont and everything below that line down to boarder of Mexico. They lost to an awesome McAllen team. Since south Texas and north Texas do not play each other at this age group (U13), south Texas has its own state championships and north Texas has their own state championships as well.
See yall on Saturday........Rick

Thanks to you 90 guys & gals that made the Rat Race yesterday...we had to turn a few people away! Another good reason to pre-register...we did have 25 walk-ups, but they were there early. This course & McDAde are probably the only two courses where we could get away with having 90 players & not be there until dark!!! But it was great to see everybody (as usual) and great to see more women playing & some new novice players...and all those old geezers (like me) in the 50+ division! Next stop...Klein Park on July 11!

Actually I play events all the time that do it. 90 players is no problem as long as you know how to sort cards to reduce backups.
Anyway I am off to look at the scores.
scoot_er
06-07-2009, 11:07 AM
Ok so I looked at the scores and wondered if all the boxes were the same or not. Moffitt is a ratings killer for higher rated players anyway but this timer there were ADV players shooting as good as the best in Open(nice shooting Don) but that in itself shows how mych of a homer course it is.
Most of the players you guys are catering to love it since they can get thier highest rated round but when you have to shoot -12 both rounds just to shoot your rating it takes the fun out of the course and makes it into a struggle for birdies.
Not an obsevation of just these events but others on true pitch and putts as well. When there is little chance of taking a 4 after hitting a tree (as in moffit with little foliage) it makes the ratings compress because the scoring range is only 2-3.5 per hole which means the Rec guys will shoot closer to the Open guy to to the lack of Bogies on the course. I mean when -5 isn't even rated 940 how do you expect to shoot 1020? Shoot -13 which in my mind is better than 1020.
The same thing happened in Nac too with a bunch of locals with low ratings shooting well making a 1000 rated round 1-2 strokes tougher.
