View Full Version : Windwood TxSDGC Tee Pads at JBP Fundraiser Tourney - Dec 18

Doug and I just finished brainstorming this idea out... Tell us what you think... We are ready to move forward.
Windwood would like to host a unique fund raiser for the TxSDGC NT event at Jack Brooks park. This fund raiser would be for their T-Boxes, not for the payout.
Dec 18th 10am @ Windwood DGC
We've created some very cool custom Bag Tags for Windwood..These have a very aviation "Flight" theme to them, and your going to want one when you see them. So lets Play for Them!!!
10.00 entry fee plus a toy for Toys for Tots - That's the entry fee.
If we fill... and we'll call 70+ players a fill, although with 21 holes we can hold 84 players. $7.00 dollars from each entry will go directly to Jake and crew at Brooks to help them with the cost of putting in permanent T-boxes on the Cedar Hills course. $3.00 of each entry will help cover the cost of these very cool custom Bag Tags. We'll have to order 84 tags in order to ensure every player gets a ranked tag. So if we have less than 70 entries we'll cover the cost of the tags first and donate everything else to Jakes group.
We'll also do a very good thing by donating a toy to Toy's for Tot's.
So what are we playing for?
1. Pride and Honor - With your custom ranked Bag Tag
2. To help ensure all children in our community recieve a gift on Christmas
3. To show/give support to those who are working very hard to elevate the local interest in disc golf, bringing in a National Tour event to the area and improving the courses we all play all year long.
Now how do we/you sign up for this event..
1. you obviously will be able to sign up starting this week at the Windwood mini on Saturdeay mornings
2. I'm going to ask all of you who hold minis and leagues to send me your email address and I'll send you sign-up sheets you can use at your mini's or leagues to help us fill this.
3. I'm going to ask Birdshot (hint hint) to take registrations at their minis.. (maybe there's evena way to send them a 10.00 "Gift" to their paypal account for entry?) possibly?
I'm sure all the areas pros will come out to support this event and to claim the #1 Bag Tag..
Last year we put out the call for golfers to help us....they came, they worked hard and we have a great course because of it... Now we'd like to do what we can to help put solid footing in place for Jack brooks..
League and mini TD's - please send me a pm with your email address if you'd like to help.
Chris Mc, Chuck, Billy, Tiff, Patrick, Dolla Bill - If birdshot can help with sign-ups let me know asap.
We all have enough plastic anyways ...Right? We can do this... We can help Jack Brooks... and then we can help another course....and another.
Did I mention....Your gonna want one of these bag tags!!!

I forgot to mention the tourney play... 1 round of 21 holes and then a final 9 hole playoff for the top 4 places in each division.

Sounds like a fun day! Have you ordered the tags yet? Will you wait to show them day-of or will we get a sneakpeak? Either way, I hope to be there! ;)
tarazarr
11-16-2010, 01:12 PM
No Sneak Peaks... But those who make the final 9 playoff in each division will have a distinguishable (sp) tag from all other players, they are 2 part tags, one part disntinguishes them as a final playoff contender (this part they will not have to put up in the future when challenged) the second part of the tag will have their ranked number...(that part of the tag is forever challengable to others who hold a ranked tag)...
Also since the only payout is going to be the custom bag tags, we are going to limit the divisions to the following:
Open.. Adv...Int... Rec...
No Protections...play your rating, play up or take on the pro's and steal a Pro Division final 9 Tag.
For those who have no current PDGA rating, or HFDS rating, you must play in the Advanced division, No Bagging

11-16-2010, 02:21 PM
this is a really good idea. count me in
tarazarr
11-16-2010, 02:26 PM
we will consider for a player who is not a PDGA or an HFDS member but has played in at least 3 Windwood minis before the fundraiser, taking their 3 highest mini rounds and figuring out a rating forthem on that course..
Please help get the word out.... If you run a league or mini...please consider emailing me for a sign-up sheet and taking sign-ups for this fundraiser. We'd like to help Jake out the best we can, have fun doing it and it's the season to give...:)
We'll also have a Novice division for those truly new to the game...

Keith you were actually one of the players I was thinking of. I suspect we'll see you again before the fund raiser, you'll need a 3rd recorded mini round to get an accurate rating for the course. Hope to see you soon

This isn't really a fund-raiser for Texas States, right?
This is a fund-raiser for tee boxes at Jack Brooks. It so happens that Texas States is being held at Jack Brooks in 2011, but isn't this actually intended to raise money for tee boxes there?
I think that the title ought to reflect the true purpose of the fund-raising activity. While either one is a good cause, this event is actually going to start the fund raising for them.

Just to let you guys know....any fundraising we (Birdshot) do between now & March will be split between Masters and States. If you guys running this tourney want it all to go to the Brooks course, that's fine! We are looking at it as States, though...sure, the tees will remain after States is said & done....but if they are not done there will be no States at Brooks! And Steve Dufrane has been spending tons of his own money on getting Shawshank ready for Masters...we feel like spreading the funds would be a good idea on our stuff....

11-23-2010, 07:04 PM
After the double barrel tourney at Jack Brooks, the comments I and everyone else here read, not to mention all the discussion within the TexasStates group, was that Jack Brooks would have some serious footing issues at TxSDGC if it rained just prior to the National Tour event and that really needed addressed.
So while this fundraiser isn't going to add to the payout.. It is so we can help these guys set the foundation for permanent T-Boxes. Which do not pack up and leave town the day after the tournament is over, or wash away in the first thunderstorm following the NT event.
There are a lot of fine individuals and groups raising money to toss into the payout and I think that's great that they are focused on that needed aspect. My priorities are just a bit different. I want to help them make the infrastructure better for this tournament and do something that not only the players in the tourney will appreciate, but all the players will be able to enjoy year round.
So in short, yes it is a fundraiser for TxSDGC. And for Jack Brooks and for you and me and everyone else who pulls into Jack Brooks for an awesome round of golf.
And also a fundraiser for Toys for Tots...:)

You know, even if States was going to be back at Tom Bass, the situation would still be the same...if it rains there the boxes (not to mention the fairways, but whatcha gonna do?) would also be either under water or muddy! And since this is part of the National Tour, we would still be raising funds & getting volunteers to do the work for tees at Bass instead. I just wanted to throw that out there for anyone who might possibly be thinking that Brooks is getting something they don't deserve....

I heard a lot of complaints about Brooks while at the Player's Cup from people who weren't even at the last event. They seem to think the new course needs more trees out than i do.
Boxes are necessary....end of story.

Jack Brooks has the sticky clay whereas Tom Bass is more of a sandy soil. Still turns to mud, just not as sticky. Hardly ever rains at States anyway right?

From the one round I've played on it, I think (like you) that a couple trees need removed. Would need to play/walk it a couple more times to know which ones.
Otherwise, tee boxes and steps would fix a lot of the issues with the course.

Windwood has an ace pot right now weighing in at over 200.00
Since this tourney is being played on Saturday at the same time as our normal mini. we are considering putting the current ace pot in play for this tourney. which could very possibly raise the ace pot at close to $300.00
If we do, then there will be no CTP for the ace pot if no one hits an ace, it will continue to carry forward to the next mini...

With the course being 21 holes, we could handle as many as 84 players....No way I think we are going to get that many people out there 1 week from Christmas, but I've been surprised before by the overwhelming support that has come out for this course before, so no telling.
I just want to make sure that everyone who wants to play and get one of these tags gets out there early enough to sign-up. Those volunteering to help out in the morning will be players, so come 9am we'll be way past signing people up.... we'll be standing on a T-box ready to go.....;)

scott, can you clarify something please, flyer reads" top 5 scores in each div. after 30 holes get the distinguished top 5 tags." first off , thats quite a few top 5 tags, jk, does that mean winner of each div. gets a top tag ? or best overall score across the board gets the better tag? might be a little strange to shoot ,say, the 3rd best score and leave with the 7 tag.
tarazarr
12-15-2010, 05:15 AM
Each player will get 2 tags. One tag is a numbered tag (just like your use to)..they are all the same just numbered 1-84. Very cool and custom made.. But all the same..
The second tag everyone gets is a unique (bonus Tag). Everyone who doesn't make the finals in each division will get one that looks the same..( it looks great hanging right along side the custom made numbered tag)
Everyone who makes the finals in say,... the womens division will get a tag that looks like the one above, except its customized to the womens division (one glance at it and you will know the player made the finals in her division).
Each division has 5 custom (bonus Tags) that at a single glance you'll know the player made the finals and you'll know which division they were in during the tournament. They will be hanging right beside the ranked numbered tag.
The confusion may have came because I used the term "top 5" I had to use that terminology because there are only 5 (custom bonus Tags) for each division and there may be more than 5 players going into the finals in, for example, the Intermediate division because there was a tie for the 5th spot in that division after the first round.
So if you had this scenario in the Int. Div after 21 holes. All 7 players will go to the Finals on the Monster 9
1. Hank 60
2. Frank 61
2. Tom 61
4. Bill 62
5. Jim 64
5. Fred 64
5. Ben 64
However out of these 7 players only the top 5 scores after (21 hole first Round + 9 hole Finals Round) will get the (Custom Int. Div Bonus Tag) the other 2 players would get the same (bonus Tag) as the players who didn't make the Finals... I went this route so that Jim, Fred and Ben all got to compete in the finals instead of throwing a CTP after 21 holes to see who made it into the finals and who did not... Giving these guys 9 monster holes to battle it out, with the added pressure of a gallery following and watching every throw.... rather than a weak, one shot CTP throw..
So to answer your question, just like every Bag Tag tourney, the 3rd best score after 30 holes regardless of division..will hold the Windwood DGC #003 tag.....
One more thing to consider here though...lets say, using the scenario above you have a "pro" division player (Edward) who also threw a 61 during the first round and that score wasn't good enough to make the finals in the Pro division...
All the players who carded a 61 at the end of the 21 hole round will throw a CTP to get their Ranked Number. If there were a total of 5 players tied with 61's and a score of 61 holds the positions of Tag numbers #010-015. Then Edward could possibly win the CTP throw against the other 61's and get the #010 tag and not make the finals....

I'm really hoping to make it out Sat. - mostly depends on work and vehicle issues. Will bring a bag of toys and register on Sat. morning. (I've only made it to one mini - threw 4 O.B. shots on 17 - it takes me awhile to go back to a course when that happens!)

The pond is almost completely dry right now Alex... That (4 O.B. shots) would be a very hard thing to repeat this Saturday...
But then again there is a new hole #20... "Three Mile Island" ....4 O.B. shots there is not unheard of..... such a simple hole..... easy cheesy...peice of cake..... wide open....240' straight ahead..

There IS a drop zone...... always has been:D which makes it about 160-170'... it's just not a 45' putt.
Maybe for tourney only... we'll put a cap of 10 strokes on the hole. Miss the green with your penalty 9th stroke and then go pick up, card a 10 and move on....
The way the hole is played has always been: Tin Cup
1 shot from the T-box - Miss the green, take a penalty stroke and move to the drop zone and your throwing shot #3
each time you miss from the drop zone - you take a penalty stroke and throw again....
Continue throwing and taking penalty strokes from the drop zone until you land it on the green.
We'll put a 10 shot cap on the hole at the tourney....
So it will play like this.
1. Shot from the T-box...(miss the green)
3. shot from Drop zone...(miss)
5. shot from drop Zone...(miss)
7. shot from drop zone...(miss)
9. shot from drop zone... (miss the basket and pick up..card a 10 and move on)

Good Luck with the Windwood Fundraiser. It sounds like it's going to be a huge success. You guys have really done a great job promoting and preparing for it. Like Billy, we wish we could be there but since we'll be helping with the Eagle Scout course install at Timber Lane Park, we're dropping off donated entry fees plus a toy donation from both Don and myself to the church. If we finish the install we'll try to make it out to watch the finals. :)

I guess I don't understand.. Eric's rating pretty much locks him into his division although I guess if he doesn't like his odds in his division he could move up to Pro.. Age/Gender divisions don't apply to him so his choices are pretty limited to hard or harder...
I expect every division to have at least 5 players except "Women's".. Maybe Pro... But how can you be sure right now? Everyone will be jockeying divisions Saturday morning at sign up until they get a minimum of 5 players, we all know that.. So get out there early, pick your division, take your chances. In the end your score is what earns your course ranking. It's too early to say how many adv vs pros we'll have..
The Saturday morning minis usually have a full card of pro/open players when that one hits the magic number of 5, they will all have a minimum of 5. Your best chances to make the finals is play your rating and bring your "A" game..

disc golf, food, and an awesome course!
i had a blast today thanks scott and doug, and whoever did the food, that was the highlight of the day.
i have a question though about the tags. the remove before flight patch is 1 tag for the finals, and the one with serial numbers is the other right?
told you id make the finals :P
that was my goal, then just had fun on the power holes.

Thank you Keith... So glad you could make it..
Ok the "Remove Before Flight" Streamer, is a miniture version of what we use on real aircraft to cover highly sensitive air speed and static air temperature ports on the outside of an aircraft when it sits on the ground or in a maintenance hangar for a few days.. It protects the openings from getting any foreign matter inside them while the aircraft isn't flying.. The streamers are there to remind technicians to remove the covers before flight.. If they aren't removed you have a very serious situation about halfway down the runway when the pilot has no airspeed indication..
That portion of your tag (Congrats for making the finals) (hookem horns orange and black for "Rec") is yours forever... The numbered tag (Windwood DGC black part) can be challenged any day, on any course by someone with another WW tag. You lose.. You trade number tags.. If their number is lower...
Bonus question... Who can figure out the code of the "Model # on your tag????
Thank you to ALL 62 registered players today!!!!
Big props to Eric Jubin who represented the Adv division and tied the top Pro overall... CTP'd and took home the #2 Tag... Way to BRING It....
It was an absolute perfect day of disc golf!!!!!
Did you see all those toys!!!! You Rock Houston DG..
We even had the Honorable PDGA board member Dave Nesbitt in GM/PRO..
Thanks again everyone, if your waiting on a tag like Billy G. (not ZZ Top) and others, I'll get it sorted out during Sunday football and well get them to you ASAP...
Anyone know who took down the temp basket on the final hole? I'm sure it's in safe hands.. Just wanting to know it's safe...
The food??? That was Celeste at Windwood .. She is awesome!!!
She is getting tag #100... we love that lasagna!!!
Thank You So Much Celeste!!!

Thank you Cody for coming. I can't tell you how excited I am that we had a great day today..
Doug Rogers and I have been working together on this course since its inception, I couldn't have done it without him today, he answers the call no matter how wacky of an idea I come up with. Kevin Rudolph, the pastor of Windwood is SO very supportive of DG.. We are truly blessed..
So many people stepped up today and made things smooth, for no other reason than the love of doing this..
Chad Tedesko... Helped me tremendously running the CTP and getting scores put in..
I have one heck of a new respect level for Chuck DP discer, and the ALL the birdshot crew!!!!!! Tiff, Dolla Bill, Patrick, Billy, Chris... All of do such a wonderful job.. And then you come out on a "day off" and jump in with both feet... Thank You for being such wonderful friends.
I want to say thank you to the many players who due to previous commitments, couldn't be there today and yet still signed up...
Brockmyer.. Gilbert... Kruse... A&D Young.. Escobedo... Berry... Mr. Ed...And many others, you all have tags...
The Ace Pot did Not get hit.... I'm guessing we are looking at a new pot in the 260-270 ish area.... Doug will give us an update on that before the next mini...week after Christmas...

I used to hate when pilots would be preflighting their jets and not remove the pitot tube covers and melt them to the sensors......6 years as a kc-135 mechanic in the air force. So the remove before flight tag was why I wanted the finals. It meant a tiny bit more :)
The power nine was a blast. Creating different lines felt like I knew what I was doing for once. I hope that more courses could use this one as an example to create different formats for a 2nd round or finals.
Other than starting a bit late even folks who haven't been to many tournaments didn't have a lot of questions becuase it went smooth. It was a great time.
See you guys when I can get another day off. Back to throwing soda's instead of plastic :(

Is there some further significance to where the dashes are?

Sorry you couldn't make it Boo but I understand work sometimes jacks our DG plans. I'm unexpectedly sitting at the gate headed to Boeing in Wa right now. Definitely wasn't in my plans this week...:o
But yes there are tags left over...
63-84 tourney numbers and
85-95 non tourney numbered tags.
I've got a long flight to figure out what I'm going to do with the tourney tags. Maybe allow the mini players a chance to buy in...
I was selling the non tourney numbers 85-100 for 10.00 each. The tags that were sold from this group were 96,98,99,100.

We were able to collect a lot of toys and raise 140.00 in cash for Toys for Tots. Cover our cost for tags and supplies and raise 250.00 for Jack Brooks.
If you had to leave before collecting your tags, please send me a PM here and we'll figure out the quickest way to get them to you..
Interesting observation... 5 Pros and 1 Adv tied with a tourney best score of 63 in the first round... That's par...

63 isn't very hot, especially in such friendly weather conditions. sounded like a lot inconsistent golf. i had 8 birdies and gave most of them back on the back 9 :(. i'm sure there were a lot of similar stories

Hey Chuck DP Discer... I found your Purple Remove Before Flight finalist tag.. It must have fallen out of the box at the house before I left that morning.. I'll plan on bringing it to you at the next meeting if not your next mini..
I chose Gold for the pro division for obvious reasons. Purple for GM, since they are the royalty of the game. Green for the Adv division to remind you guys you need to move up and play for the green cash. Blue for Intermediate, cause it just seemed like the right color. Orange for Rec cause I liked that color and had planned on playing that division. The red w/ black was the standard tag (non finals) so I chose the reverse color (black w/red letters) for masters, cause they are no different than regular players, just older, and older guys still like to win sometimes too ...(lol ... Just kidding)
Oh and the black w/ pink ladies tags I thought were the best looking ones of all.. :D

62 people at $10 a head and we were only able to raise $250 for tee boxes?
Can you help me with the math, Scott?

On the first post here it says $3 would go towards the cost of the tag & the other $7 was for Brooks....my calculator says it should be $434 if there were 62 players....

Bag Tags cost $5.75 each.
Custom Printing 32mm Aluminum Tags = $3.75 each
Remove Before Flight embroidered tags = $2.00 each
62 tags x $5.75 = 356.50
62 entries @ 10.00 = $620.00
620.00 (entries)
-356.50 (cost of tags)
--------
263.50 (donation)
-13.50 (string for pond/ island and wire to stake it down. supply expense)
---------
250.00 (net donation)
I have not collected the entry fee from 2 people yet (but I'm sure they are good for it)
so the actual numbers at this point would be 20..00 less for donation (230.00)
Hope this helps.....

Billy,
It said "If we fill.... and we'll call 70+ a fill.... It also stated clearly if we have less than 70 entries, we'll cover the cost of the tags first and donate everything else to jakes group...

That's cool, Scott....IF you had filled then $3 each would have covered the tags...since you didn't it was a bit more. I knew it wasn't going to be $10 per player going to the donation...just didn't know about the possibility of the tags being more than $3....no prob! I'm sure Brooks appreciates everything you guys did!

On behalf of Toys for Tots, I would like to thank everyone for their toy or cash donation. I am directly involved with Toys for Tots and I can assure you that your contributions will help brighten Chritmas for several children that are far less fortunate than we are. The toys were great and the cash will be used to buy toys at a discounted bulk rate. We are all volunteers, so, there are NO administrative costs. Every cent goes towards new toys for these kids.
Thanks, again, and know that there will be several less fortunate children with smiles on their faces this Christmas because of you!:)

Regardless of how the math works out, The Jack Brooks Park Disc Golf Club appreicates every penny raised at the Windwood fundraiser. Just the showing of 62 players alone shows people in the Houston area want to help build better courses. The funding raised will help pour concrete tee boxes at Brooks in time for the state tournament next year.
Thank you to Scott and Doug and everyone else involved with putting that event on. I wish I would have been in town to attend.
As most of ya'll know, I have been working on the creation of Brooks as a destination disc golf facility for some years. The concrete tee boxes is the next step in creating that vision. And a sucessful States will push it to the next level (2 more permenant courses). Think big right...
The real next step: Look for work days to begin the 8th of January and continue practically every Saturday and Sunday henseforth.
We have the cash,
We have the permission,
Lord knows we have the need.
All we need is the labor to make it happen...
That's where we all can play a part. Please plan to help a Saturday in the coming weeks. I truely hope people both from the south and the north can put the discs down for a day and travel down to Brooks for a work day soon. The heavy work is scheduled to start late January. We're renting a bobcat to do the grade work needed to prep the tee box locations but we'll likely need people with wheelbarrels to move the concrete.
Again - thanks to all who coordinated & participated in all of the tee box fundraisers that took place. Now, the prize can be delivered. Can you say sure footing! I thought you could.
Happy New Year to everyone and thanks for providing a Merry Christmas!
See you all at Brooks.
