For those of you hiding under a bush who haven't heard yet, the 2011 US Masters is happening at Shawshank Disc Golf Penitentiary near Huntsville on April 8th, 9th & 10th...registration opened up a couple of days ago & we're already cooking with gas! This is one of two huge events in our neck of the woods next year, so everybody get together & help make Masters and Texas States the best that they can be...volunteer your time & make plans to help make these PDGA Majors something we can all be proud of!

The US Masters is a major and all participants must pass the PDGA rules exam. In 2011 they are making everyone retest even if you have passed previously (typically you only need to pass every 3 years). The new rules exams is available as of last night on the PDGA website:
http://www.pdga.com/officials-exam-ready
So if you are playing in the US Masters or any other major you MUST take the 2011 rules test!

So Jim posted on the PDGA board his concerns about the doubles format and after actually looking at the post describing how it would be played I must say I was speechless. I still don't really know what to think about it although I would say using a Major to try experiments is not a good idea and is better left to smaller events.
42 mulligans?
21 for a 945 guy but 0 for a 955? Why?

No really....I don't know what to think since it is doubles and unsanctioned yet because it is at a major and such a horrid format you will surely raise some eyebrows. Not only that but you increased the time of the round by at least an hour with all the extra shots (mulligans and cumulative format) thus further limiting the ability for people to practice the course.
Why is it someone rated 945 gets 21 mulligans and even if they only save a stroke 25% of the time that equates to 5 strokes which would be around 995 while a guy who is rated 955 which is only 1 stroke per round better gets no handicap............and is stuck with the same playing field as Barry..........
Jim would probably like a response on the PDGA board although I will try and stay away from posting there.

I say this with all seriousness, this could possibly be the longest doubles round in history. I trully do not understand the logic behind this silliness and it seems wholly unnecessary. Just have seperate divisions and be done with it. Oh and the argument that "this will give new players more throws on a new course" only holds water for those playing in the tournament and it seems that a number of participants are not.

I think you guys need to talk to Eric and Neal as they are the creators of this, and Eric is only one who reads either board. So, maybe a phone call?
griff

in this format, just an example, tim and i will give alex and dan, who won spring valley dubs, 21 extra throws. perrigo and Mcoin 21 extra throws, and bart and cory 42 extra throws. handicap or crippling? i'm assuming this is eric and neals baby, you two are smart guys, THERE HAS GOT TO BE A BETTER FORMAT! for the most part i believe day before a tourney dubs is used as a way for out of town players to get a chance to look at a course and play with some locals under competitive circumstances, and maybe make a little change doin it. and also for some locals to see how they stack up against different players. this dubs tourny may be unsanctioned, but it is in direct association with a major event, don't make this a carnival sideshow.
griff
01-30-2011, 12:27 PM
and by the way.. dubs has been done in a divisional format for a long while...BECAUSE IT WORKS!!! how about a combined player rating divison? anything but the current format.

I hope that the putting contest doesn't have mulligans or gimmick ideas...

My biggest issue is the fact I feel many who are already signed up, like Griff, are clueless as to what they are getting into and will be smacked upside the head 5min before teeing off. Easy way to piss people off before the event even starts!

boo hahahahahahahahhahahahhahaha - 21 extra throws - hahahahahahahhahahahahhhahahahahahahhahahahhahaahh a
Hey, wait a minute... those guy's are getting 42 extra throws - waaaaaaaaaa, boo hoo.
If you don't want to play this format - don't sign up.
If you don't like the course, directors, other players, date, weather, the sport, God, the Beatles, Texas, or anything else... then DON'T sign up!
Simple.

On a completely different topic...
For anyone not playing in Friday night's Night Golf rounds:
I'm planning on holding a $60 buy-in Hold'Em tourney on Friday night at 8pm. We're going to be staying at a lakehouse East of ShawShank. Shoot me an e-mail or PM and let me know if you're interested.
We will probably start a ring game on the side for anyone that busts out early and still needs a poker fix. :D (Like me!)

The rubber pads that Steve used at Shawshank ARE great....but remember, these are on private property. If you were to put these same pads out on Houston courses, they would either be gone or abused/torn up within a week! Concrete is the way to go on Houston courses...you just have to babysit them until they're dry so some fool doesn't write in them! But once they're set, they're not going anywhere & they're not getting torn up or stolen ("Look! We can use that for our new door mat!").

I had a great time this weekend playing Masters and want to thank Tiffany Brogdon for staying on top of everything as TD and everyone who volunteered to help out. It was great playing against folks from all corners of the disc golf world and meeting so many new faces. I wish I could have done better but at least I had a lot of fun.
Shawshank looked great this weekend and the upgrades to the course were fantastic. I do think it is time for Shawshank to abolish Death Row out there, or at least open it up enough that the hole isn't such a gimmick. That hole played slow each day and added frustrating strokes to everyone's game.
My only complaint about the weekend had to do with the dinner on Saturday. If a meal is going to be included in the cost of entry then there should be more food choices than beef or salad. I don't eat beef and the salad wasn't enough after a six hour round. Everyone knows you don't make friends with salad. Fortunately we found a great Mexican restaurant with some great chicken fajitas close the the hotel. Next time either offer more options or don't add the cost of the meal to the entry.

On Friday, our card teed off early, we also noticed those type of pads were a bit slick with the morning dew on shoes and pads. Once dry they were great.

Results from the Mulligan Team Doubles on Thursday:
http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q193/ejubin/Disc%20Golf%20Events/ts_usm_2011_doubles_results.jpg
The mulligans actually did a pretty good job of evening the field across the ratings. The higher rated players still shot slightly better on average. And with the exception of one outlier player in the 2MPH group the data shows that even two mulligans per hole was not enough to bring the sub-900 rated players into the same grouping with everyone else. The mulligans were not "free strokes", just because you had a mulligan (or two) didn't mean it was necessarily going to help you.
The data below is for individual players, not teams.

ERic, you're right about those mulligans! I'm thinking maybe the reason Brockmyre & I were in last place is because we stupidly USED some of those mullies when we shouldn't have!:D Too bad you couldn't do the handicap like you do at the SWHM series....or if we had played best shot instead of raw scores with mullies, maybe we could have done better...or maybe we need to learn how to play better (more likely the case!). I had fun though, and it was a good warm-up for the weekend rounds...althought it didn't help me much!:p

Well, it's kind of been awhile since the Masters, but good stuff is ageless. Here's a music video created by Melissa MacGregor, Neal Dambra, David Currey, and Chad McManus about the event entitled, "Gonna Bust Some Chain". Enjoy.
