Default Review: Tiger Woods 10 Disc Golf

With all the rain this weekend I was really glad that I finally bought the new Tiger Woods 10 for the Wii with the new disc golf option. It allows you to play all 28 courses in the game as disc golf courses and allowed me to get in five full rounds of 18 without leaving my house.

EA Sports, the publisher of the game, did a much better job translating our sport to the Wii than the two previous disc golf titles (Vacation Sports and Big Beach Sports). Driving is a bit clunky with no option to throw rollers, sidearms or hammers; you're basically left to forearm shots. You tilt the control left to arc left, right to arc right and flat to throw straight. The driver is capable of 150 yards, which is necessary because all the holes are golf length and measured in yards and can get up to over 400 yards.

The mid-range is a bit more controllabe and can handle hyzers and the like better than the driver. It also does good on a straight up and down shot and can travel 75 yards. By my 5th round I got a few eagles with long mid-range shots.

The putting motion is very realistic. When I started playing I wanted to toss the disc forehand but once I tried my standard putt shot – up&down straight at the basket – I was dropping them in easily from up to 20 yards.

There are a few beefs I have with the game, making all the sandtraps have a mindatory one-stroke penality isn't at all accurate for example, but overall it's the best DG game I've seen on any platofrm. It actually feels like disc golf should and the courses are fun too. I hope EA takes this engine further and releases a dedicated disc golf game with real courses.

Here's a youtube preview.

With a new born in the house, I haven't been able to play much DG, but I did buy this game, and I have a hard time playing the DG feature on it. It is nothing like the real thing.

On the other hand, since I have never finished a real round of ball golf in less than 110 strokes, it is addicting to play all those courses and finish 10-12 under par. It is a sweet game and I have put in about 120 rounds of golf this summer with a new born in my left arm. It is a great golf video game.

The new Wii Sports Resort also has disc golf on it. I like it better because you have the option to choose a driver, mid range or a putter whenever you need them.

You can do the same in Tiger Woods, it just suggests the right disc for you at the start of each turn.
