Tourney Trophy Birdshot Disc Golf Weekend/August 28-29, 2010

I wasn't sure whether to put this thread here or on out of town tourneys...I decided on in town! We're going to spend the entire weekend doing a North/South thing at the end of August....two back-to-back PDGA sanctioned C-tiers...on the north side in Kingwood on Saturday August 28th...and way down south on Sunday the 29th at Dunbar Park in Lake Jackson! So you can either make your choice of staying on your side of town on one day or the other...or you can show how much of an addict you really are by attending both! Both tournaments are now available for online registration on our website www.houstonbirdshot.com. Come spend the weekend playing our favorite game with our favorite people!

I think I'll play both. Just not sure what division yet. Need more points in BCS race. Playing better would help no matter what division I choose.

I believe the weather in Lake Jackson for this tourney will be the EXTREME opposite of the last tourney we all played there. (March of Dimes)! Wish we could have a happy medium!

Hey, you never know...we could have our first cool front that weekend! I remember being out at Brooks three summers ago around the 10th of August....a cool front had just come through & it was like 65 degrees! It was so nice I went back out later that day & played in it again....I just hope the mosquitos aren't as bad as they were a few weeks ago when we played there after the Clute mini!

i will hopefully be at least spectating this event in kingwood. not sure i wanna embarrass myself by playing. but in the event i decide to give it a whirl, what division should i play? common sense tells me since ive only played for 3 months it should be rec. but i know some sports like paintball, have weird set of rules to bump you up to rookie after playing 1 event or something like that. can someone direct me to a good site, or literature that would explain this stuff to me?

even though ive only played for a few months i do have a general grasp for the game, and just need to learn the disc's better. so im worried ill be going out there with some people in rec that might have only played once before and stomp them. that just doesnt sound fun.

anyway rant over. just want to make sure i look like a noob here, and not out there.

thanks in advance

As far as what division you might want to play in....if you are a member of the PDGA & have played any tournaments, that is how your rating is determined. Since you've never played a tourney (and probably are not a PDGA member)...plus you just started playing a few months ago....you could even get away with playing in the Novice division! If you feel like you're a natural & you've been shooting fairly well on the courses you've been playing, then play Recreational. If you did that & proceeded to wipe the floor with the rest of the division, then next time play Intermediate if you want more of a challenge. Some people learn more quickly than others...I've been playing a LOT for five years & am still rated Novice according to the PDGA (although I'm slowly trying to climb back up to a Rec rating!). I'll have the occasional higher rated round, but I have a lot of bad tournaments too...and that's what counts for your rating.

If you'd like to know where you should play to be competitive, then post some scores of what you've shot at local courses and folks here can let you know if those are Novice, Rec, or Intermediate level scores.

i mainly play at mcdade and randomly at river plantation to warm up before going to mcdade.

some days i shoot par, some i shoot -2, some days i shoot +6 but generally i shoot par since thats what i try for, and take a birdie when i can

i didnt know novice was below rec. been looking for the (food chain) for a while now, just havent really found it

The C-Tier tourney held on the current McDade layout in June had an SSA of 49.67. That means a 1000-rated player would average 49.67.

If "par" for you at McDade means a score of 54, and that's what you average, then you're a about 955-rated player which is well into the Advanced division. You can use this link to see the various player ratings for different scores at McDade: http://www.pdga.com/tournament-resul...ratings=1#Open

You can find the food chain, i.e. PDGA division, breakdown here:

wow, yea im not that good. if seasoned players are playing novice and maybe rec, then i sure im at the lowest bracket. i guess i asked the wrong question.

either way, the help was great. thanks

looking at the division breakdown, id play novice. just to see whats up, as im sure alot of my playing has been almost everyday for the last 3 months on the same course has me looking better than i probably am.

thank you for the links, really helps me out

and i have 1 other question, how patient are people with newer players coming to these events?
